Phantom hounds seem to be associated with lonely
brooks and streams, where they appear (and disappear)
silently, as the dusk fades.
Consistent attributes are confirmed by eyewitness reports:

Larger than any Great Dane or mastiff
Blacker than the surrounding darkness.
It moved without making a sound
I’m certain it was aware of us
The eyes were red, and blazing like marshfires.
It leaped through a sort of opening in a hedgerow, and was gone.
My God, hand me that brandy and quick.

So when you’re in East Anglia
(Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex and Cambridgeshire)
and the daylight is fading, near a brook,
a stream, or miraculous spring,
