Two Tales of Uncanny Visitations

by Bob Drake

/
1.
We could never find that shop again whose proprietor showed us that mezzotint depicting the following: Across the lawn of an old stone house a figure crawls on all fours covered in grey tattered linen of its anatomy nothing may be distinguished save for one arm which extends toward the house scaly, rugose and so frightfully thin. In its paw scintillates an object: it's an inter-dimensional portal! Which one might say it's offering to the badger and fox who are asleep in the hammock on the porch and don't seem to notice.
2.
See that church on the hill? It's been locked and closed to public many years now and deconsecrated long ago because of the sound which is regularly heard issuing from the clerestory with no obvious means of production on Summer evenings at sunset and carries on 'till dawn. Those who've heard describe it "like chanting of dogs."
